I don't know where exactly to post this, since this kind of crosses with philosophy as well, but here it goes.
Why is it that a plane crash is perceived as a really bad thing? Of course it's bad, but when compared to other kinds of transportation-related fatalities, planes are one of the safest mode of transportation, if not the safest. Car accidents
annually cause more than one million deaths, while aviation fatalities
range somewhere around one thousand deaths annually. Statistically, planes are one thousand times safer than cars.To set the mood...
Yet when a plane crash happens, people freak out over the whole thing. It is a tragedy, of course, but people don't freak out the same way over thousands of car crashes that happen every day. And gods help you if you try to bring this up to people, because you will be judged as a cold, psychopathic bastard, and receive a plethora of comparisons to mass-killing dictators.
What do you think causes people to freak out and lose their minds like this? Or maybe you are one of those people who freaks out and would like to share your reasoning for your feeling? Your opinions are welcome.
